Physical Therapy for Sciatica Baton Rouge, Denham Springs, Gonzales & Surrounding Cities

Sciatica is a serious condition that can cause severe pain for a patient. While it can be caused by a variety of injuries it is important that the patient seeks professional medical care before it worsens to a degree that requires surgery. Physical therapy is a course of treatment that provides relief and can prevent irreparable damage.

What Causes Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition that revolves around the sciatic nerve. The nerve extends from the lower back, down both legs, and to the feet. Often sciatica is caused by pressure or damage to the sciatic nerve. Often this pressure occurs when a herniated disc or strained muscle pinches the nerve and in rare cases the compression can be caused by a tumor. Bone spurs are another common cause of sciatica. The risk of developing sciatica can be increased by certain factors like obesity, occupations that require strenuous physical labor, or occupations that require extended amounts of time sitting. Regardless of the cause of sciatica it is important to receive treatment before it becomes too severe.

How to Treat Sciatica

There are many simple solutions to both treatment and prevention of sciatica. Sciatica can be prevented by regular movement, exercise, and stretching to prevent muscle spasms and herniated discs. Treatment involves many of the same methods however it should be done with the help of a physical therapist. The diagnosis process will often include an x-ray, MRI, or EMG test as well as tests to determine your mobility and strength. Physical therapists will help you regain strength, correct your posture, practice helpful workouts or stretches, and eliminate unhealthy habits that could worsen your condition. Occasionally Sciatica is severe enough to require surgery, however if diagnosed early and with the help of a physical therapist, surgery can be avoided.
