Well, this is a common complication with overhead athletes. Overhead athletes can be found in a wide range of sports including baseball, volleyball, tennis, or softball just to name a few. Often times the cause of the injury is pretty obvious: tight/weak shoulder muscles. Other times the cause isn’t as obvious. It was for these occasions that we at BRPT-Lake developed the OHAS, or Overhead Athlete Screening tool.
The OHAS is a battery of 13 movements designed to test strength, flexibility, and balance of the entire body. By assessing the entire body, the OHAS allows us to screen for more uncommon causes of pain which might would otherwise go unnoticed. Some of the areas we test include:
Each test is designed to assess a different part of the overhead athletes motion. When the results are compiled, they allow us to either design an exercise plan to address the athlete’s areas of weakness/tightness, or in cases where the athlete experiences pain, we may want to see them in the clinic to address the underlying issues.
If you, or someone you know, is having issues with performing an overhead sport, contact us at BRPT-Lake to set up an evaluation, and we can use the OHAS to identify any areas that may need to be addressed before they turn into major injuries! You can find our contact info by going onto our website and finding a location near you. With 7 locations in the Greater Baton Rouge area, your bound to find one close to you!
